The first step to getting rid of possums from inside your ceiling is find out how they are getting into your home.

Here we see a possum gain entry into a roof via moving some lead flashing. Ensure that the possums are not sleeping inside and have the damaged area repaired. Examine the ceiling to check for holes they might have used to make their way in. A possum can find its way into your roof space through a multitude of spots.

Ensure that you install the tree guard at least two metres above the ground so that the possum can t climb anything to access the tree s trunk above the guard. Firstly clench your fist and this will demonstrate the minimum size a possum will need to be able to force itself through a gap. This will usually be under the eaves or through a gap under your tiles. Possums can find many different ways to enter your roof or walls.

Possums will only be on your roof regularly for three reasons they are living in your roof they are living on your roof or they are using your roof to get from a to b. Possums are often able to lift tiles so this needs some attention if your roof is tiled. A neighbour installed internal chicken wire panels between the joists so even lifting tiles would not gain them entry. Day lighting the roof with glass tiles worked for me but who knows how possums react to different situations.

Possums are quite energetic especially the brushtail meaning that they can lift a roof tile easily when searching for a place to live. Trap the possums and seal up entry points. If you find that possums have already lifted your roof tiles and made their way inside for a sleeping den you should approach the area during the day.
